More than just a drive from winery to winery, our education-focused wine tours follow a field trip model with interactive learning with your guide and educator, Jeff D. Peterson along the way. Jeff will walk you through the history, stories, grapes and actual vines of the Willamette Valley. Each field trip will explore different themes and visit different wineries/vineyards, so if you love wine and field trips as much as we do, we hope you’ll join us for more than one! Group size limited to 6 to 8 students.

The French Connection in Oregon: Oregon is the wine region most associated French wine region of Burgundy - its climate is most suitable to growing the two varieties known in Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In our vineyard visits, we will learn more about the connection to France, how it has influenced Oregon wines, and how the French have come to see Oregon as a place where they wish to make wine as well. We will discuss the French concept of "terroir," and how that idea has, to some degree, been applied to grape growing in Oregon. We will discuss why French wine-making techniques are common here in Oregon, and taste wine for examples of those practices!
Different Paths Through a Vineyard: Before you make wine, you need to make decisions how to farm and grow a grape. In this field trip, we will talk about and visit vineyards founded on different grape-growing philosophies, including biodynamics, organic, sustainable, and conventional farming techniques. We will talk about what grape varietals are grown here, and why, as well as the possible impacts of global climate change, as the Oregon wine industry looks to the future. We will try some of their wines, and you decide if you can taste the difference!
The "Other" Grapes of the Willamette Valley: Oregon grows a lot of Pinot Noir in this region, but there are other grape varietals grown here with some success. We will discuss why certain grape varietals are grown in this region, and not others. We will then visit vineyards that are less commonly known than Pinot Noir, talk about how and why some vineyard owners have decided to grow them in Oregon, and taste the fruits of their labor!
Diversity in the Wine Industry: The wine industry in Oregon is growing at a rapid rate, and as it does, it is becoming increasingly diverse. Learn about the current state of diversity in the wine industry, and visit some of the vineyards and tasting rooms of new and upcoming BIPOC vineyard owners and winemakers. Hear their stories of how they came to be in the Oregon wine industry, and learn how to support them!
About your guide: Jeff D. Peterson is a sociologist and professor in the Wine Studies Program at Linfield University. Jeff grew up in Latin America and has traveled extensively through Latin American wine regions. Through his project Vinum Docet (Latin for wine educates) his mission is to share his love of wine in ways that go beyond conventional technical tastings, helping people explore the many ways in which wine can be experienced.
