


Italian Wine Scholar Course
Unit 1 -Northern Italy — Each classroom day includes guided tasting of over 10 delicious wines as well as a traditional, regional, shared lunch. In-person learning is complemented one-year access to the IWS Northern Italy online learning portal, complete with videos, interactive exercises, and everything you need to keep your studies on track. Certification Exam is Saturday, December 2, 10am.
Unit 2 - Central and Southern Italy — Each classroom day includes guided tasting of over 10 delicious wines as well as a traditional, regional, shared lunch. In-person learning is complemented by two sessions in the Online Classroom.. Certification Exam is Saturday, April 13, 10am.
Tuition: $885 per Unit (includes all wine fees, printed textbooks, online course materials, exam, certificate, pin and traditional, regional lunch to correspond with learning).
The Italian Wine Scholar™ education program provides committed students of wine with the most comprehensive specialization program on Italy bar none! This in-depth program was created by native Italian, Maurizio Brioggi, DipWSET, FWS with the support of the Italian wine DOC/G consortia.
The Italian Wine Scholar™ program offers an unparalleled level of depth, accuracy, detail and academic rigor for the serious wine student. The course covers Italian wine law, grape varieties, viticulture, winemaking, wine industry trends and economics as well as the regulations, wine styles and specificities of Italy's DOCs and DOCGs.
Registration is inclusive of all fees including the full-color Italian Wine Scholar study manual, 1-year access to the online study program, exam registration and all tasting fees.
Who is this program for?: This high level certification course is ideal for students with a solid foundation in basic wine knowledge and/or previous wine training. Students will need to allocate time outside of class for reading and review in order to be successful in this rigorous course.
About the exam: The exam for each unit consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates need a composite score of 75% to receive the IWS credential. Students with a composite score of 85-90% pass with honors. Candidates with a composite score of 91-100% pass with highest honors.
About the instructors: This course is co-taught by Mimi Martin and Tanya Morning Star Darling. Mimi Martin, DipWSET, CWE is education director at The Wine & Spirit Archive and was named Italian Wine Scholar Instructor of the Year in 2019. Tanya Morning Star Darling, CWE, FWS, IWS is owner and educator of the Seattle-based wine school Cellar Muse and is a Vinitaly International Wine Ambassador.
